French Azilum Historic Site in Towanda, PA

The French Azilum Historic Site in Towanda is what remains of the French refugee colony established in 1793 for nobility fleeing the French Revolution. Called “Versailles on the Susquehanna,” the colony had more than 200 residents and many distinguished visitors. It lasted for ten years.

Today, visitors can walk the entire 22-acre site, watch an informative video, and explore some of the original buildings on the site. Visitors may also enjoy a guided tour of the LaPorte House by costumed docents.

River access, camping, and a wedding venue are also available.

The French Azilum hosts events throughout the year. Visit their website for a complete calendar.
